The haze softened each ridge until the green treetops gave way to blue layers I had been looking for.

Story
I was hiking Kapālama Ridge Trail, climbing and dropping over and over. The day was hazy, so the view wasn’t as clear as I’d hoped. But the haze gave the mountains a different kind of beauty. Each ridge faded a little more than the one before it.
I’d been drawn to layered photographs for a while. When I saw the green treetops in front of me and the blue ridges falling away behind them, I stopped to make this one. It was one of the first photographs like that I took that I felt genuinely proud of. The hike was grueling, but views like this made the effort worth it.
