Story

A couple of friends and I drove from Volcano toward the ʻĀinapō Trail. We parked and hiked the rest of the way to Halewai cabin on Mauna Loa, where we would stay for two nights.

We reached the cabin in the evening. I could feel the elevation in a way I hadn’t before, and the sky was turning soft pastel colors behind a large ʻōhiʻa tree. I stopped to photograph its dark branches against the last of the light. Later that night, we saw a distant glow that I believe came from Kīlauea.
